Beware of Scholarship
Scams
Nature of
recent scam: Students receive a letter
from a company called College Admissions
Assistance. The letter states that the
student is scheduled to participate in an
educational group presentation followed by a
personal interview to help determine college
admission and financial aid eligibility. The
letter goes on to state that colleges are
already identifying prospective 9th graders
and the students' parents needed to attend
the meeting because their child's future is
"too important not to attend." The letter
looks very official.
At the interview, parents
listen to a 3-hour presentation and are then
asked to pay almost $2,000. For those that
don't have the money, the company's
representatives offer to set them up with a
payment plan.
As of late September, the
Better Business Bureau had receive 14
complaints about the College Admissions
Assistance.
Never give money to
anyone claiming to be able to get your child
academic or athletic scholarships!
