Helping Eagles
Helping Eagles is just that--Eagles helping Eagles. Whenever a Sycamore High School student or student's family is involved in any type of catastrophic loss, this group of students makes sure that the person injured or negatively impacted would be visited and/or contacted by telephone or by mail during the student's entire period of need. This group also makes sure that the entire Sycamore community is apprised of the student's condition, if the family permits, and helps with fund-raising events for Sycamore students' families who have excessive medical bills. Additionally, Helping Eagles helps students in other crisis situations, such as a fire destroying a home or the loss of a family member. WHO IT'S FOR: A group such as this is particularly well-suited for students considering careers in the health, education, social work, ministry, and psychology fields. It also aids students with the college admission process, in that the group sponsor, Mrs. Dodson, keeps up with the number of community-service hours each student contributes and also writes a letter or recommendation for those students who have been involved with the organization. WHY WE STARTED: The need for this type of organization at Sycamore was brought home to Mrs. Dodson as one of her former students, Kevin Hatfield, lay in a hospital bed for months longing for a visit from Sycamore students other than his girlfriend. Helping Eagles would have made Kevin's summer in 2003 more positive, and Mrs. Dodson hopes that other hurt Sycamore students will know Sycamore truly cares. In 2006- 2007, more than $12,000 was raised and given away to more than five families. HOW MUCH WORK? Helping Eagles members may choose to be involved on different levels. Some may wish to visit Sycamore students in the hospital. Some could write cards. Others could make telephone calls. And still others are strictly interested in raising money. In other words, different people with different personalities are needed and encouraged to participate. Students choosing to visit students in the hospital will be given special training prior to their first visitation, and they are typically upperclassmen. Mu Alpha Theta
Mu Alpha Theta is the National Honor Society and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society with over 75,000 student members in more than 1500 schools. It is dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject and promoting enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college.
Students interested in applying must already have completed Algebra 1, Algebra 2 Geometry. They also must be enrolled in or have completed Pre-Calculus, or Calculus. The cumulative GPA in these mathematics must be a 3.5 or better. The overall cumulative must also be a 3.5 or better.
The honor society is expected to participate actively and positively in the life of Sycamore High School. Students involved in Mu Alpha Theta will be required to be available one hour per week after school for peer-to-peer tutoring. In the first half of Fall Semester, students may instead attend weekly practice sessions for the UT-Knoxville Math Contest (held each October). This will enable candidates and members to strengthen their mathematic skills. It will be a way to enhance the learning environment for mathematics for the rest of the student body.
The society is required to have at least one meeting per month where mathematics is discussed. These will be opportunities to explore mathematical problems and discuss mathematical topics. The nature and scope of these meetings will be determined by the officers.
