Language Arts

AP English

11th grade and 12th grade – Teacher approval

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program is a cooperative educational endeavor of secondary schools, colleges, and the College Board. It consists of college-level courses and examinations in specific academic disciplines for highly motivated students in secondary schools. The AP program provides course descriptions and teaching materials as well as examinations based upon those descriptions. Textbooks, schedules of lessons, or teaching techniques are not provided. A specific state framework for each course has not been developed. The curriculum is considered to be more accelerated and more in-depth.

The AP course in English Language and Composition (3080) should train students to become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts. It also should allow them to become flexible writers who can compose in a variety of modes and for a variety of purposes.

The AP course in English Literature and Composition (3081) engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. They develop critical standards for interpreting the effects writers create by means of the artful manipulation of language. (1 Credit)

Competency English

The student will master those areas of language arts which are necessary for success as a high school student. It is possible for students to enter the high school without having succeeded in learning to use the English language competently. This course is intended to help address the areas of language learning in which weaknesses have been identified. (1 elective Credit)

Creative Writing

Grades 11-12

The student will be given the opportunity to develop this creative outlet through additional writing experiences. Students often have the opportunity to experience expository writing in the classroom but have little time to develop imaginative writing. Creative Writing allows them to promote self-expression, to explore various writing styles, and to strive for variety in diction, sentence structure, and format. (1 elective Credit)

English 1

Grade 9

The student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences.

Writing is a life-long interactive process that is used to communicate with a variety of audiences and for a variety of purposes, adapting language conventions appropriately according to context. Students will write in order for an act of discovery, means of personal growth, and a tool for clarifying knowledge. To accomplish writing tasks more effectively systematically, such as those included in the stages of the writing process. At the end of the course all students enrolled will take a state mandated exam that will be 15% of the final grade. (1 Credit)

English 1 Pre-Advanced

Grade 9 - Guidance Approval

The students will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences. Students will focus on MLA format as well as complete a rigorous college prep curriculum. At the end of the course all students enrolled will take a state mandated exam that will be 15% of the final grade. Teacher approval only. (1 Credit)

English 2

Grade 10

English 2 focuses on developing an appreciation and interpretation of world literature and the fine arts, as well as mastery of grammar skills. Out-of-class reading and the development of composition and speaking skills are stressed. (1 Credit)

English 2 Pre-Advanced

Grade 10 - Teacher Approval

Advanced English 2 is designed for students who are motivated to expand their knowledge through study of major literary works. Summer reading, critical reading, mastery of grammar, supplemental vocabulary, intensive writing and a research paper are required. English 2 is a Gateway course. A semester end test which counts 15% of the grade must be passed to meet the state mandated graduation requirement. (1 Credit)

English 3

Grade 11

English III is a course that seeks to integrate the standards of reading, writing, viewing and representing, and speaking and listening. Students will work to comprehend and produce a wide variety of texts, including traditional works of literature, practical and persuasive forms of communication that involve speaking and listening skills, and the use of appropriate technology and media forms. The course emphasizes the communication and critical thinking skills necessary to enable students to deal effectively with multicultural and ethnic diversity in a rapidly changing world.

The assessment step is a key part of the learning process. Performance Indicators accompanying the Learning Expectations offer assessment suggestions for each expectation. These are, however, not the only possible assessment options; teachers are encouraged to develop their own. To that end, alternative assessment suggestions are included in the Appendices.

The English III Standard 1.0: Writing is also assessed through the writing component of the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP). (1 Credit)

English 4

Grade 12

English IV is a course that seeks to integrate the standards of reading, writing, viewing and representing, and speaking and listening. Students will work to comprehend and produce a wide variety of texts, including traditional works of literature, practical and persuasive forms of communication that involve speaking and listening skills, and the use of appropriate technology and media forms. Speech

Grades 9-12

The student will develop the skills to generate ideas, research topics, organize information, and prepare for oral presentations. Students throughout their lives will communicate within the family, in the workplace, and in society. In order to become a more effective communicator, students will prepare ideas in an organized format, speak clearly with confidence and poise, and listen critically to others. (1 elective Credit)
