Mr. Hilyer was born in
a small, rural community in Alabama, but
lived for varying periods of time in Miami,
Huntsville, Dallas, and New Orleans. His
family settled in Auburn, Alabama where he
completed high school before going on to
graduate from Mobile University with a BS in
Biology. He later attended New Orleans
Baptist Theological Seminary receiving a
Masters in Religious Education. The
following 10 years of his life were spent
primarily in Spain where he lived and taught
while attending school at the University of
Seville. In 1991 he returned home and
completed a Masters in Hispanic Studies at
Auburn University, where he was also
employed as a full time Spanish teacher for
6 years, while also working as a consultant
with the Program for Students with
Disabilities, and coordinating interpreting
services for hearing impaired students.
After leaving the University in 2000, He
returned to Spain and then to Mauritania in
North Africa, where he taught English at the
Centre d’ Anglais. In 2003 he came to
Tennessee and decided to stay. Sycamore High
School needed a Spanish teacher at the time
and I was hired after completing a Masters
in Education at Belmont University. It has
been a great experience for him, and while
he has enjoyed the varied experiences of his
journey, teaching high school has become his
first love.
